Welcome to the third installment. Somehow, miraculously, we remain afloat. In this issue we have five interviews as well as the epic return of Derek Brooks Game Corner. Our interviews this time are with legendary underground emcees from New York & Memphis, as well as interviews with several art and music legends from Little Rock.
This guy is both our cover model and the last interview for this issue. He is well known in Arkansas for being a really professional performer, emcee, and a nice guy as well. Epiphany and everyone else in this issue are all very active with their communities, and inspiring people with their creativity.
This is an artist I discovered sometime in the 90's, when he was active with the group Antipop Consortium. What stood out to me was, well, everything about them. Their beats had electronic textures and at times really bold experimental arrangements. Their lyrics were extraordinarily abstract. Since then all the members of that group have put out solo work, but they all continue to have the same qualities that can't be duplicated. Regardless of your feelings towards his sound, just know that this guy is a very smart artist who is never afraid to be himself, and he has had a lot of practice. Thankfully he found time to answer some questions for us, despite the fact that he just released three albums and a book.
This dude is like the Rodney Dangerfield of rap. He has been rapping non-stop in the Memphis area for many years, throwing many shows, and often performing out of state as well. I mean, the guy has a hypeman who comes out and disses him before he performs, and he has a song about guys needing to pull up their pants. He is a serious lyricist, but his jokes and overall routine are hilarious. Check out his answers to our questions.
She is a multi-medium visual artist, a yoga instructor, and a fashion designer in Little Rock. Her familiar shirt designs, many of which showing pride in Arkansas, have become a very common site to see across the state. I expect one day to be watching a movie and someone walk by with one of her shirts on. Anyway, her work is awesome, so we tried to get a little insight into the sort of things that move her.
Man, this guy right here...if you ever meet someone who says they can't stand Brooks, get away from that person immediately because they are clearly a non-human reptilian! He has played in an amazing amount of quality and typically successful bands, including Unwed Sailor, Ginsu Wives, and Bear Colony. He has his own screen-printing shop, called Electric Ghost, and like I said, he is just an all-around great guy. I for sure enjoyed this interview!
Back by popular demand, is the retro video game series that you all asked for more of. But you asked for too much I tell you! TOO MUCH! Because this time he whipped out the Sega Master System. I can see based on the expression on your face now that several of you never heard of this game console. But I have a feeling many of these games will be very familiar to those of you who still know what an arcade is. For those who still feel lost, just bask in the low bit rate glory of Derek's colorful descriptions.
